 Today in Whenua we had to have posted our rangoli patterns otherwise we would have to post it at lunch time above is the rangoli pattern that I designed for our Diwali celebrations work I hope you like my pattern. The easiest part for me was designing the pattern in my maths book because you had an idea on your Chromebook in front of you. and the most difficult part for me was getting all the triangles to fit with the gaps between them. by Harrison

Today we had to write limericks above are my limericks I wrote I hope you like them. The easiest part for me was thinking of someone to write about for my limericks. Paralympic

 Today we did a bit on our paralympic work I started this activity in lockdown but never finished it because I couldn't find half of the information but today I found it all this is about how far it is to get to Tokyo from these places around the world. The easiest part for me was the flight time because it was very easy to find. And the most difficult part for me was finding the travel distance because where ever i looked I couldn't find it but today I found out how to get the travel distance.

Meerkat research

 Today for home/online school we had to do a weekly quiz on things that have happened in the last week and once you finished the quiz you had to pick a topic from the quiz to research about and I choose the meerkats that have just been born in wellington zoo. The easiest part for me was picking a topic because I thought meerkats would be cool to research. Bu the most difficult part for me was getting information because for some reason there was not much information to write that was interesting. By Harrison

Today for home/online school we had to do an addition and subtraction slide show of problems above is the slide show i did i hope you like it. The easiest part for me was doing the first question because for me it was very simple. but the hardest part for the was the one where you had the number 1-9 and you can only use each one once only and I could get 1,441 but then i didn't use three numbers so it wouldn't count. Today for home/online school we had to read a school journal about a nine-year-old boy that cycled the length of the north island above is the activity we had to do on the book I hope you like it. The easiest part for me was reading the book because it wasn't hard. But the most difficult part for me was writing the notes partly because I didn't really know any of the important notes but I got some in the end. By Harrison

 Today for at home school one of our can dos were history on dogs above is some research on the history of dogs and some pictures of my unties dogs and our dog Alfie I hope you like it. The easiest part for me was watching the video on the history of dogs because all you had to do is listen. And the most difficult part for me was remembering all the information from the video.  Today for online school we only had to do a maths buddy task about simplifying fractions and the word of the week above is my word of the week the word this week was obligation I hope you like it. The easiest part for me was getting a picture obviously because you just search up the word of the week and go to images and get a picture. the most difficult part for me was writing a sentence because I couldn't get one that made sense but i think it makes sense now. Converting improper fractions into mixed numbers

 

Today for online/home school we had to record our speech's and do our slide show about converting improper fractions into mixed numbers above is the slide show I hope you enjoy it. The easiest part for me was doing the top equations because the video we had to watch explained them. But the most difficult part for me was trying to figure out the bottom three questions because the video didn't explain them and I couldn't figure out the answer for the questions but I will update the slide show once I figure out how to do them. Whenua bake-off

 Today for home school we had been doing a bake-off below are some photos of me and my brother Wilbur making (un)healthy peanut butter balls. ingredients:  3/4 of a cup of peanut butter, 1 cup of icing sugar, 1/4 of a cup of melted butter then you had to mix it with your hands and finally roll it into balls and put it into the fridge for about 1 hour then they were ready to eat. the easiest part for me was making it because Wilbur was mostly mixing it and I was only helping with the measurements because he was really excited to help. but the worst part was waiting for them to harden up while they were in the fridge because we really wanted to eat them. Ghost cities

 

The last two weeks in Whenua we have been researching ghost cities above is my research on a ghost city the ghost city I did research on was oradour-sur-glane i hope you enjoy it. The easiest part for me was choosing what ghost city to research about because I choose oradour-sur-glane because it had to do with world war ll. The most difficult part for me was getting information because we didn't actually do much on ghost cities until lockdown because we were doing other things in class for reading. By Harrison

Olympics research

This week and last week in Whenua we had to do Olympics research about traditions or how the Olympics started or anything about the Olympics above is my Olympics research I hope you like it. The easiest part for me was picking what to research about the Olympics because I chose the opening and closing ceremonies and Olympic traditions and what the Olympics were like when they first started. The most difficult part for me was finding information about the opening and closing ceremonies and how they were compared to how they are now. By Harrison

 Today in Whenua we had to create a video explaining the buzz quiz we did to test our personality and what jobs would be good for us I hope you like it. The easiest part for me was taking the quiz because the questions were simple. The hardest part for me was creating the video because I didn't know what to say. By Harrison 

careers

 Farming 

They are not allowed to transport all of their crops and livestock in case they had diseases like covid-19. It was hard with the virus to keep the food growing that people were depending on because harvesting crops takes a large number of people to do and they are usually all close together which means it harder to harvest as many crops as they did before covid-19.

Builder 

 

The building was allowed to continue throughout covid-19 except for level 4 but they could work in levels one, two, and three but they had to follow the restrictions with levels 2 and 3 with location tracing, social distancing and wearing masks.

Accountant 

Accounting was no exception they could not work where they usually work because of social distancing. 

Veterinarian 

Vets had to provide clients and colleagues with covid 19 safe environments and embrace digital health care while ensuring that they can continue as a viable business. They were classed as essential workers so they could work during some lockdowns but many pet owners avoided the vets in case of covid-19.

Radiographer 

Radiography plays a big role in diagnosis for covid-19 mainly the most affected people. Chest radiography should only be reserved for those very ill patients. As radiographers work on the front line they should be aware of the risks with covid-19.

Today in Whenua we had to post our research about how the five jobs that we choose last week to write about how they were affected by covid-19 I hope you like it. The easiest part for me was getting information for a builder, farmer, and radiographer but there wasn't much that I understood. The most difficult part for me was getting information for an accountant

Careers

 Farmworker 

Farmworkers help farmers with tasks like helping raise livestock and repairs and maintenance. There are no specific qualification requirements for becoming a farmworker but many farmworkers prefer to employ farm workers that have taken a farming program.

Pros

You get a reasonable amount of money for being a farm worker. You get to drive tractors around a farm and get to go hunting on the farm that you work at if the owner lets you.

Cons

You have to work all year in any weather conditions to keep the farm going and to look after the livestock. Farm work usually involves early starts. Higher chance of injury (mostly from not following instructions). 

Builder

Builders are in huge demand because there is a shortage of people being builders and you have a big option on where to work nationwide once qualified. Salaries are reported to be increasing every year and many builders earn over $100,000 yearly. There are no qualifications needed to be a builder. But years 11 and 12 can learn more about the construction industry by doing a national certificate in the building.

Pros

Reasonable salary, team environment, and no building project are the same as the last one, creative work and constantly changing environments and problem solving and many builders gain experience and go on the start their own building business.

Cons

Physically demanding work (standing, lifting, walking) high chance of injury mostly from not following safety instructions. Confined workplace.

Accountant 

Accountants provide accounting systems and services relating to taxation and the financial dealings of organizations and individuals. New Zealand has a shortage of accountants around the country.

Pros

Reasonable salary regular working hours (9-5) in most cases, people facing, exposure to different industries. And you could be an accountant overseas once you are one.

Cons 

Many aspects are repetitive such as financial reporting which needs to be done monthly. Roles overseas are often contract-based and can lack career progression opportunities. 

Veterinarian

Vets treat sick and injured animals, provide general animal care, and provise about health care and disease prevention for pets and farm (production) animals to become a vet you need to complete a five-year bachelor of veterinarian science course (Massey university is the only institution that offers the degree).

Pros

Good salary, people and animal facing. A variety of areas to specialize in job satisfaction from treating animals and making them feel better. Varied day-to-day patients all sorts of animals to animals to look after.

Cons 

Physically demanding (restraining animals, standing, lifting). continuous exposer to a range of irritated animals some kick, bite and scratch. And the hours can be unsociable like working on weekends, evenings and holidays.

Radiographer

Medical radiation technologists use x-ray and other imaging equipment to take pictures of injuries or diseases. New Zealand has a shortage of radiographers in public hospitals, in particular, The most recent government data confirmed  a starting salary of $57,000

Pros

Good salary, people facing, hands-on job, Variety of areas to work in, job satisfaction from treating patients, possible working opportunities overseas.

Cons 

It's physically demanding work standing and lifting. You may be exposed to radiation. Hours may require you to work on weekends and holidays.

This week in Whenua we had to write a brief paragraph about the jobs we choose to research about i hope you like it. The easiest part for me was picking the five jobs because there were only twenty to choose from and these are the ones I would most like to do. The most difficult part for me was writing about the jobs because there was a lot to write.

octopus writing

Hi and today I am going to be talking to you about octopuses because that is what we have been researching in class. Below is some information about octopuses like the Habitat of the octopus its prey, the species of octopus's and the predators of the octopus. The octopus has eight legs and the biggest octopuses have an arm's length of a two-story house also the arms are covered in tentacles which are like little suction cups.

Habitat 

octopuses live in many different places, under the ocean. 

octopi have no skeleton so they can squeeze into small and tight places. octopi also live in kelp forests and coral reefs, octopi tend to prefer warmer water meaning they live in sunlight zones, they also live in tidal rock pools where they can easily Discuz, themselves as oddly-shaped rocks to capture prey.

Prey

octopuses eat a lot of different sea creatures.

octopus have venom and different octopus have different levels of toxicity which means they can kill their prey easily. octopuses feed on crabs, clams, snails, small fish, and other octopus. octopi are one of the most intelligent creatures in the ocean to catch their prey.

there are 289 different types of species of octopuses all around the world.

 I would rate this book a 7/10 Because it explained what the animals did in the war very well. But It didn't explain why some animals just go to war to be there. It was also a very interesting book. I learnt that New Zealand's mascot was a dog.

 Dear Grey Distract Council 

Hi, my name is Harrison and I am going to be telling you why we need a downhill bike park in Greymouth. This would give us many health benefits, increase fitness and give us more activities to do in Greymouth.

The health benefits of bikeing/ cycling Just 32km per week can reduce the risk of heart disesase to less than half. Biking also reduces the chances of of type-two diabeties, all types of cancer, high blood pressure and obesity. which is why I think we should have a bike park to so we can try to lower the chances of serious illness.

I think we need more things to do for fitness in Greymouth because we don't have a lot of options. Only 10% of secondary school students met the current recommandations of 60 minutes of exercise a day last year. Also a lot of people that age would like to ride there bikes down a hill with jumps on it. So if we had a bike park the 10% would rise. 

More activities to do in Greymouth. One in three adults and one in five children are over weight in New Zealand which means we really needmore activities like a bike park to help people lose weight. And if you gain weight and don't exercise could lead to death because physical inactivity contributes to 8 percent of all deaths.

In conclusion I think we should have a public down hill bike park in Greymouth because it will help with fitness and health. I hope you use my ideas and make it happen.

Should a language be an invention?

I think a language should be an invention because someone a long time ago must've created the words otherwise how would they be here. It's not like the first person on earth just knew every single language in the world like someone had to invent them.

Today in Whenua for maths we had one piece of string and a ruler to figure out the circumference, radius, and the diameter of a perfect circle above is a picture of 5 circles I measured and their measurement hope you enjoy it. The easiest part for me was picking things to measure. And the most difficult part for me was getting the circumference because it was hard to measure it after I wrapped it around the circles. Energy

 Today in Whenua we made a pool of knowledge in our house groups about energy and what we already know then we had to share back to the class to make one big one. Then miss farr took a picture of it so we can look back at it at the end of the year and see how much we know then. The easiest part for me was thinking of what I already know. And the most difficult part for me was trying to explain what the different types of energy are.

 Today in Whenua we had to do our weekly quiz on events that have happened in the last week and one of the questions was about the tv show what now and its 40th birthday. After the quiz, we had to research about the tv show whats now above is a picture of my work. The easiest part for me was getting pictures because they are easy to find. and the most difficult part for me was finding information because everything was written the same on like every website.  Today in Whenua we did an activity from our blog contract I chose the weekend sports activity above is 3 weekend sports that I like to do. The easiest part for me Choosing an activity because that was the most interesting thing to do so I did it. And the most difficult part for me was writing why I like to do sports because i couldn't think of why I like them so much.

Every Tuesday we do french and for french, we had to research about a country or place that speaks french above is a picture of my research. The easiest part for me was choosing a place to research because there was only a couple option so I chose Chad. The most difficult part for me was finding information because I couldn't find anything interesting.

 Today in Whenua we had to write a poem about something we own and I decided to do my bike above is the poem I wrote about my bike. The easiest part for me was thinking about what i would do for my poem because my bike is my favourite thing. The most difficult part for me was making it make sense because you can't really mention things like dirty more than once. By Harrison 

The tree of life

 She held hope in her outstretched hands. Kneeling gently on the ground, she prepared herself for what she knew she must do. The cool water trickled through her muddy fingers, and the soft, black earth felt comfortingly warm on her palms.

Planting the tree of life would mean a new beginning. The opportunities were endless…

Feeling the excitement course through her quivering body, she lowered the tree of life into the small hole she had prepared. It was time. After 1 month the tree was 4x its original height. Since it has gotten bigger it has blocked the little stream right off, but tonight it was very stormy so the stream was rushing faster than usual. So it went right over the roots on the tree and back onto its normal path but the normal path was full of dead leaves from the powerful winds the winds were so powerful that all the leaves from the tree blew off. And the roots from the tree were getting so much water that the tree was beginning to slowly die off. And the worst thing about it was that if it died everyone else would die so heaps of people were blocking the stream off so they could maybe save the tree. sadly people were losing hope in the tree but they kept on trying and trying for weeks and finally, the tree started to become healthy again but they knew it would take about a fortnight to be completely healthy again. 2 weeks later. The tree was back to normal with the little stream going slow again. In fact, the tree was healthier than ever so good people will be able to breathe for hundreds of years if the dam doesn't break and people look after it. And maybe just maybe there will be more trees by then.

WALT use descriptive language

 It was a shiny hot day in Moana when everybody was jumping off the bridge or on their boats. After I went swimming I went over to the golden sand that was burning hot. It was so hot I couldn't even walk on it so I had to walk in the clear blue water. It was so clear I could see the little slimy eels because I opened up the shells and chucked them back in for the eels to chomp on later. Once we saw them we decided to get a hand line and try and catch one. 30 seconds later one little slimy one came and swallowed the bait but when we got it out of the water the sharp hook was only in its lip so it was easy to get out. Once it was out we chucked it back in but I had slime all over my hands but it drys very quick so it took about 10 minutes to scrub the dark brown slime off. After it was off we went out on the lake when we got deeper we could see the long green lake weed. When we touched it we all started swimming faster because it felt weird on our feet and we also knew that the big eels hide in the lake weed and we did not want to get bitten. When we came back in we went back home because it was about 5:00pm.

Today in Whenua we had to do a all about me slide so tomorrow we can start drawing our self-portraits above is the slide that the self-portrait is going to be on. The easiest part for me was writing my hobbies because they are easier to think of because I do them heaps. And the most difficult part for me was brainstorming about me because there weren't heaps to write about my hobbies and interests and also family. By Harrison 

Kawa of care

 Today in Whenua we went over the kawa of care to make sure we remember all the rules that we signed when we got our Chromebooks at the end, we had to pick a number out of a hat and that number would have a rule of the kawa of care to explain and mine was when I take my Chromebook home I will bring it to school charged and in good condition every day. The easiest part for me was explaining what to do as soon as I get home. And the most difficult part for me was at the start thinking about how I am going to explain it. By Harrison
